International Womens' Day: Women United, Women Empowered!
The IFBWW is asking its affiliates to mobilise for this very important event, particularly in the period from 8 of March until 1st of May 2004 by calling for Women United, Women Empowered!
More women are working in the building, wood and forestry sectors in low paid jobs and face very difficult working conditions. Women are more likely than men to be in informal activities that are not registered and in small scale economic units. Many of them find themselves working in informal, unprotected and precarious conditions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe and other parts of the world.
The IFBWW together with other GUFs reaffirms the equal rights and inherent human dignity of men and women as an inalienable integral and indivisible part of all fundamental freedoms as stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Beijing Platforms of Action on Women and ILO Convention 111 on anti-discrimination.
We encourage our affiliates to use our poster which is placed on our website English: http://www.ifbww.org/files/8-3-2005-EN-A4.pdf French: http://www.fitbb.org/files/8-3-2005-FR-A4.pdf Spanish: http://www.fitcm.org/files/8-3-2005-ES-A4.pdf Our poster exists in English, French and Spanish.
All of you are also invited to use some of the following tips:
- The key to ending poverty is the realisation of sustainable decent jobs in our sectors - Create a women friendly environment at work and in unions - Include all women concerns in the collective bargaining agenda and agreements - Fight and negotiate for equal treatment including equal pay for work of equal value - Create, negotiate a safe working environment which if free of sexual harassment as this represents an abuse of power and authority - Put women in decision making of our trade union movement. - Continue to lobby for the ratification and implementation of ILO and UN Conventions on women - Create and support women structures
Remember, Women are the workers, Women are the consumers, Women are the organizers, Women are the educators, Women are the mothers, Women are the loving wives, Women work harder yet paid less, Women are the unseen and the unheard.
United, we will break the chains of gender inequality! United, we are the empowered women of the world!
